Double Bass
Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Eugene Levinson is the former principal bass, New York Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, section bass, Leningrad Philharmonic. Solo performances with New York Philharmonic, including concertos by Koussevitsky (live recording conducted by Zubin Mehta), Tubin (conducted by Kurt Masur), and Mozart’s Per questa bella mano, conducted by Riccardo Muti and broadcast on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center in 2004. Author of School of Agility (Carl Fischer), many editions of solo bass music, and soon-to-be published guide to orchestral excerpts for Boosey & Hawkes. Awarded Distinguished Special Recognition in Orchestral Performance by I.S.B. (2003). Solo recordings for Pro Arte, Melodiya, and Cala labels. Master classes and coaching worldwide. Judge for Koussevitzky and Sperger Double Bass competitions. Guest artist at Eastern and Carmel Valley, CA, music festivals. Faculty, Aspen Music Festival and Sarasota Music Festival since 1979. Former faculty, Peabody Conservatory.
