Cello

Jeffrey Solow’s impassioned and compelling playing has enthralled audiences throughout North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia as recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician. His concerto appearances include performances of more than 40 works with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic, Vietnam Opera & Ballet Orchestra (Hanoi), Prime Philharmonic (Korea), Seattle Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the American Symphony (with whom he also recorded), and he has been guest artist at many national and international music festivals. His recordings, two of which were nominated for Grammy Awards, can be found on Columbia, ABC, Centaur, Delos, Kleos, Everest, and Telefunken labels. The summer of 2024 saw his sixteenth cycle of Bach’s 6 Suites for solo cello at NYC’s legendary floating venue, Bargemusic (which sailed into the sunset this year and now offers its concerts on dry land).

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Mr. Solow’s wide-ranging interests include scuba diving and underwater photography, protozoology and paleontology, and he graduated with a degree in Philosophy magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA while studying with and later assisting the legendary Gregor Piatigorsky at USC. He has served as president of ASTA—the American String Teachers Association—and of the Violoncello Society of New York. A prolific writer, The Strad, Strings and American String Teacher magazines have published his articles and reviews, and his numerous editions are published by Breitkopf, International Music Company, Edition Peters, Ovation Online Editions, Elkan-Vogel, and Henle Urtext.

Recognized worldwide as an outstanding teacher and an authority on healthy and efficient cello playing, Jeffrey Solow has presented master classes throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia. He has been Professor of Cello at Temple University since 1989 and received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2020.
